Do You Know What You’re Eating?

Food sold in our grocery stores consists of ingredients that have low or no nutritional value, contains preservatives, additives and / or has residue harmful to human health.

“Do You Know What You’re Eating?” may sound like a crazy title. But is it? Do you remember the original Charlie’s Angels? Three absolutely gorgeous, vibrant, young American girls. All three developed cancer. One died fighting it. All were rich and famous and could afford the BEST care…. Pretty scary cancer statistics, if you ask me.

Recently, a spotlight was pointed at the rapid rise of colon cancer rates in people in their 20s! No, I’m not an alarmist but think about it: what could these people possibly have in common? Nothing, except of food.

The word “food” was always synonymous with nutrition. We have to eat to thrive, maintain good health, strength and live out our natural lifespan. Today’s American food consists of ingredients that have low or no nutritional value, contains preservatives, additives and / or has residue which is / or can be harmful to human health.

The average consumer isn’t even aware that food legally sold to the public might be dangerous… There is truth in the saying that we are overfed and undernourished. For one, we may not make the best food choices. But the second problem is that our food supply is devoid of nutrition and not as safe as we as consumers believe!

WHAT’S IN OUR FOOD?

  • On fruit and produce there are pesticides and indigestible wax.
  • In meat and milk antibiotics, growth hormones and more.
  • There is an overload of salt and sugar in MOST foods.
  • There is an abundance of gluten in products you wouldn’t expect to find gluten, like hotdogs or bologna.
  • Processed deli meats are loaded with nitrates.
  • There are also quite a few “mystery” foods out there: like “imitation cheese”…
  • Worse, you’ll be surprised to learn that some single-ingredient foods we know well have a LIST of ingredients! (I just discovered that to be true of heavy whipping cream.)
  • In addition to the few highlights above there are artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, artificial food coloring: the list is long.
  • Please note, that I didn’t even mention the more recent concerns over genetically modified fruit and vegetables.

If you can afford organic produce, buy organic! If you are on a budget, many regular grocery chains are selling organic fruit and vegetables at relatively low prices.

Meat? Eat healthful organic meat, ONLY! Expensive? Yes. But safer. How to manage it financially? There are ways. Eat less meat: replace meat with beans. Buy organic meat in whole foods’ markets or join a collective which is usually less costly.

Today you have to know what to buy and what to eat not to become a gourmet mind you, but to minimize your own and your family’s health risks. “You are what you eat”. Considering the quality of our food that’s scary. Most of us are disease lying in wait. Give it a thought.
